Teaching Tip: Modals

Modals are fun. Here's an easy and fun exercise to get students using modals.

Have each student take out a piece of paper and write this sentence at the top:

If I had 10 million dollars.

Begin by asking the students what they would do or could do with 10 million dollars. Then have the students write a sentence with could or should below the first sentence.

Examples:
I would quit my job.
I could travel around the world.

The students then pass their papers to the person on their left.

Next, on the pages that were passed to them, the students convert the modal sentences to "if" sentences. For example:

I would quit my job becomes If I quit my job. Everyone then follows this new "if" sentence with a modal sentence:

If I quit my job
my boss would be very angry.

And so on until each student gets his or her original page back. The more students in the group, the more elaborate and entertaining the stories become. Have each student read his or her story aloud.
