This word game serves as a warm-up and a
motivator to expand the student's vocabulary. The game begins by choosing a letter and then listing verbs which begin with that letter underneath it. A allow act accommodate adore align Then I write the other parts of speech across the top of the board. Students must fill in the noun, advective and adverb forms. They can work as teams or as a group. It can be done as a competition or as a class project. A Verb Noun Adjective Adverb allow / allowance / allowable / allowably act / actor / action / actionable accommodate / accommodation / accommodating adore / adoration / adorable / adorably align / alignment Not all verbs can be made into nouns, adjectives and adverbs, as you can see from the above example. The fun is in trying to identify as many parts of speech as possible because students will come up with their own creative versions which may or may not exist. Allow students to correct each others' guesses because it sharpens their listening and vocabulary skills. This is a multi-skill exercise which can even be used as a homework assignment.
