Teaching Tip: Recipes

Every teacher knows that the subject of food is a surefire class-pleaser. Here are some lesson tips for teachers who are ready to go beyond "What’s Your Favorite Food?"

Part I – Recipes

Target Language – describing a process; transitions.

First, give each student a blank recipe sheet (name of dish, ingredients, directions) to fill out on their own (note: this lesson works best if the students already have some basic cooking vocabulary—add, pour, stir, mix, chop, etc…). Choose one dish from the group and elicit the directions from the students. Introduce new vocabulary in your questions. For example:

Q: What do I do first?

(A: First, add _____ to _____.)

Q: What do I do next?

(after that?, then?, last/finally?)

As you go, write the instructions on the board. Once the recipe is complete, have each student present his or her recipe to the class using the new vocabulary.
