Writing Tip: Keeping a Journal

A great way to help sharpen your writing skills is to keep a writing journal, a notebook where you can practice new skills, do pre-writing exercises, and develop new ideas for writing projects and assignments. Try to write something in your writing journal every day. Here are some suggestions:
  1. New Vocabulary – whenever you learn a useful, new vocabulary word, record it in your journal. Write a few practice sentences using the new word.
  2. Errors – when your teacher points out errors in your writing, record the error in your journal. It’s best to write the entire sentence containing the error, followed by the corrected sentence.
  3. Ideas for writing – Whenever you have an idea for an essay, story, or poem, write a few sentences about it in your journal.
  4. Quotes – Record interesting or inspirational quotes from your favorite writers.
  5. Readings – Write down your opinions of the things you read. How did a piece of writing make you feel? Was it effective? Why?
You can use a writing journal for almost anything. The important thing is to practice writing every day and keep a record of your progress.
